The second most populous city in the United States, Los Angeles owes much of its economic prominence to oil, catapulting into the global arena in the 1920s with the unearthing of the world’s richest per-acre oil producer of the time. By the post-world war era, Los Angeles had further cemented its status in the global economic ecosystem with the advent of industrial manufacturing bringing in a second population boom. Today, Los Angeles is the largest metropolitan hub on the west coast—the most glamorous place on earth, where cinema, fashion, music, and pop culture are defined for the world round.
Hollywood aside, Greater Los Angeles’ Silicon Beach has developed a strong presence in technology and innovation over the years, with particular expertise in the realms of gaming, digital media, software, ecommerce, animation, biotech, and aerospace tech—an industry that has been reinvigorated as of late, with the arrival of Elon and his SpaceX rockets in Hawthorne. Sprawling for dozens of miles in every direction, the Greater Los Angeles area encompasses four counties (Los Angeles County, Orange County, San Bernardino County and Ventura County) and includes, most notably, Santa Monica, Burbank, Pasadena, Irvine, Long Beach, Culver City, and Marina del Ray, with Santa Barbara often thrown into the mix.
With its niche technological exploits appealing to a gifted subset of the graduating population, Los Angeles has little trouble
attracting raw talent, though growing traffic congestion has begun to take its toll on those not fully sold on sunshine and
artistic inspiration. Larger, more established conglomerates have recently begun joining their younger brother startups, embracing the
disruption of tradition and implementing people operations and talent management on a heightened strategic level. As is often the case
with Los Angeles, the artistic flair in the environment has led to even more unique techniques to tackle everything from performance
management to onboarding programs to training.
